and asking the questions of how many instruments should one really have?

I don’t have the answer…. but i think for basses. 6 should be just right. 5 would be almost perfect, but that would mean i would need to sell off one of my current ones.

This is a sneak peek of my latest bass.

I guess you can have many instruments you want in the world. But if none are set up right. Whats the point? If you only have one, and has got it serviced and setup proper, it’ll be better than the person with many, but not setup at all.

March the Bass Month

March shall be deemed the bass month, I love working on basses although I don’t often get a chance too. This week was an exception where I worked on a few basses. Including my own! Assembled a high mass bridge on a japanese fender and did some thorough setups on 2 ibanez basses. Still in the midst of working on the neck of a beautiful Warwick Streamer LX4.

Next month, shall be bass month, book in your basses now and get 15% off what i usually charge to fully service your bass!

Well, I was a huge fan of supporting local businesses when I was staying in Auckland, New Zealand. Don’t see why I should stop now. Most definitely at times prices and stocks are hard to compete with the big 48 states, but local business people still need to put food on their table.

I would be getting supplies and stock from Music Master for most bits and pieces required for your guitars that I service.

Finally been able to get my cards rolling out. Been a long long two weeks but i’ve been having some good quality family time. definitely with the wrong circumstances though.

Managed to get a new head rest when i’m setting up guitars as well! Was thinking of wood working one out myself, but this would be more flexible and convenient. especially when i’m doing on site and rush jobs.

Finally done some overdue quotes as well with some shipments incoming from the USA. Should look forward with a good steady flow of jobs after the chinese new year.

the cards have given me a new idea for a new bass as well! how apt

bands of friends

or friends of bands. there are not too many bands that i would give a mention for the sake of mentioning. or name dropping for name drops sake.

however. there are two bands of friends in new zealand that i find worthy enough to mention. besides a lil bias thoughts ofcourse!

First up, a band lead by a good friend and you could say instigator of my stupid gear obsession in a direct/indirect way. Atlanta Fall lead up by front man cum song writer, fellow Malaysian Jim Yong. A four piece pop rock outfit emerging from the depths of Auckland, New Zealand, with a seemingly fresh and aggressive sick puppy love style of writing citing influences of paramore and underoath yet trying to melt the ladies hearts. I managed to get along to a few gigs, putting the countless raw demos i’ve heard of from the band out of my head, and managed to get some decent shots of the band in the process.

atlanta fall were just beginning to nail a consistent good live sound when i last heard them, i even had the chance to sit down and do some microphone shoot outs to best suit the vocals for the band mix. Jim Yong the ex-gear whore currently captures the ladies imaginations with a Shure Beta57 in his pack. Thats right, a beta57, not a 58.

atlanta fall is due to release an ep in the next month or so, from the two tracks i’ve heard, it may very well shoot them up to pop-rock stardom!

the other band to mention is, Tokyo Keys who call them self a huge wall of synth is quite apt with the amount of synths and backing tracks they use. I had the privilege to mix the band at their first non-parachute live show. If i was a punter that night, i would have thought these guys were famous and i’ve been living under a rock! Their show was amongst the favorite sound gigs i’ve done. Simply amazing, setting up the stage for them was bit of a headache however! Their demos on myspace, a boy who fell and runaways in the night are my most played songs for two weeks running. have a listen and be a fan!

a shot i took from said gig. these guys truly know how to write songs that stick to your head! with plans to be the coldplay of new zealand, they have even imported a gearwhorewannabe/genius from nowhere! Paul Jackson from Oswaldtwistle plays a Nord Lead 2, Korg SV-1, other misc Korg synths and pedals as well! also seen in the picture is a yamaha cp-70 belonging to front man Jordan Westrupp (yet another tech/musical whizz).

inspirasi why the birth of vinzmusic? over the years i’ve heard countless complaints on the conditions of guitars in Malaysia. Even picking up the guitar myself, horrible action, wrong string gauges, bridges that were miles high! would i have benefited with better setup guitar? maybe….

i once heard about a friend buying a japanese fender locally, it was set up bad. Being a customer, and definitely within his rights, asked for a setup, straighten the neck, lower the action, intonation sorted. He was asked to pay an excess of RM160. For a guitar he had had yet to play outside of the shop. Ridiculous. My service to you, includes stupidly affordable setups, good ones too! Let my service to you fuel my passion for tinkering around. Like a regularly serviced vehicle, your guitar needs to be serviced on a regular basis too.

my palette expands towards the live sound experience as well. trying my best to match the most suited pieces of gear towards your act, as well as the best eq and mixes that can be done with the available gear or budget. experiences in musical gear retail has given me a good edge to try out different microphones and different setups, talking and discussing to customers and fellow gear heads on the most optimum setup for their sound. most optimum does not at all mean the most expensive! i probably may enjoy doing a live mix for a vibrant energetic band just as much as i enjoy jumping around on stage with my bass!
